That’s why I always try to put my clients near windows whenever I can. The only tricky bit? Natural light changes so much, depending on the weather and the time. 

Warm Light: Think old-school light bulbs or warm-toned LEDs, with their yellowish tint. Under warm light, skin often looks healthier and warmer, but, it can also hide some imperfections and make colors look warmer than they really are. So, if you do your whole face under warm light, it might look way too heavy or yellowish under cooler lights.

Cool Light: This is stuff like fluorescent lights or those cool-toned LEDs, with their white-ish or bluish cast. In this kind of light, skin can look paler, and any imperfections really pop, and colors can appear cooler. Makeup done under cool light sometimes looks like it’s lacking warmth or color when you see it in warmer lighting.

Mixed Lighting: This is when we combine both warm and cool lights. Best of both worlds, right? It’s like a cheat sheet for accurate color and less color variations. And that's what a lot of us pros swear by.

Putting Together Your Dream Makeup Light Setup 

Alright, so what makes for the perfect makeup lighting situation? Here’s what I always go for:

Color Temp That You Can Tweak: Lights that let you switch between warm, cool, and a combo of both are ideal. That way, you can see how the makeup will actually look in different situations. 

Soft, Even Light: The light needs to cover the whole face evenly, avoiding any harsh shadows or those super bright spots. Soft light makes everyone’s skin look amazing. And direct, harsh light can just create unwanted shadows, or even hurt your eyes. 

Good, but Not Too Bright: We need enough brightness to see everything, even the small stuff. But it can’t be too intense, or it just tires out your eyes. 

Lots of Light Sources: I've found that it's so helpful to have more than one light. A ring light, a table lamp, even some extra lights aimed in different directions make a huge difference. 

Zero Glare: We want to avoid lights that reflect harshly off things because that’ll throw off your vision and mess with how you see the colors.
